Handy freight market. Asia-Pacific region // week 46

In mid-November, Handymax/Supramax cargo traffic remains slack in the Asia-Pacific region. However, the owners have managed to raise the rates slightly due to the shortage of such vessels in spot positions in the southern part of the basin. It should be noted that the number of available vessels dropped due to the increase in trade last week, when the owners were massively chartering fleet at low rates.

Supramax vessels are still mainly chartered for coal transportation from Indonesia to China and Southeast Asian countries. Shipments of Philippine nickel ore to China, as well as those of Indonesian coal to India, are far less frequent. The time-charter for Supramax vessels bss DOP dely China via Indo redel China is now negotiated within $6-6.5k daily. The owners’ ideas bss DOP dely SEAsia via Indo redel China reach $8k daily, though the charterers offer at best $6-7k daily. A Supramax carrier has been chartered at $6.45k daily for transportation of salt bss DOP Spore via Aus redel China. Such vessel can be chartered at $7k daily bss DOP dely S.China/SE Asia via Indo redel India. It should be noted that the owners have lost premiums for such shipments due to improvements in the market. Only some contracts bss DOP dely China via Indo redel India have been concluded at $7.2-7.3k daily.

On the voyage-basis, the transportation cost of 50,000 t of coal from South Kalimantan to southern China with H2 November laycan dates is negotiated at $5.1-5.2/t. Carrying a similar cargo lot from Indonesia to the east coast of India costs about $6.5/t. The contract for shipment of 60,000 t of coal from Lyttelton (New Zealand) to eastern India with December 5-20 laycan dates has been concluded at $15.05/t. Carrying 45-50,000 t of the cargo from Dalrymple Bay to Argentina is quoted at $11-12/t. The rates for transportation of 50,000 t of iron ore from Teluk Rubiah to Vietnam with November 14-17 laycan dates are negotiated within $4.8-5/t.

The export volume of Australian grain remains low. Major players refer low sales volumes to a delay in harvesting, caused by adverse weather conditions in the country. In particular, ISM sources report freezing weather in western Australia and heavy rains in the eastern part of the country. Alumina is occasionally offered for transportation from western Australia to China and Southeast Asian countries with December laycan dates. Carrying 60,000 t of barley from western Australia to the Middle East (presumably to Saudi Arabia) with H2 December laycan dates is negotiated at $13/t. Shipping 50-55,000 t of the cargo from western Australia to China is still quoted at $11/t. Transportation of 30,000 t of alumina from Bunbury or Kwinana to Lianyungang is quoted at $12.5/t. The deals for shipments of 25-30,000 t of the cargo from western Australia to Malaysia and Indonesia are negotiated at $11.5-12.25/t. A Handymax carrier of 35-36,000 dwt has been chartered at $5.35k daily bss dely Port Klang via Aus redel China.

The demand for Handymax/Supramax vessels remains weak in the Far East amid limited offer of steel products and grain. At present, the time-charter for Supramax fleet bss dely China redel Vietnam is negotiated at $4.9-5k daily. A Handymax carrier has been chartered at $5.2k daily bss dely CJK redel Penang. The rates for Supramax carriers bss dely CJK redel USG amount to $2.5-3k daily. The time-charter for such fleet bss DOP dely N.China via NOPAC redel Spore-Japan is quoted at $5.5k daily.

Next week, the rates are expected to stabilize at current levels in the Asia-Pacific region if the cargo offer and tonnage supply remain relatively balanced. Otherwise, the rates may inch down in the basin.
