Handy/Supra owners enjoy further improvements in SE Asia

The situation remains favorable for Supramax owners in Southeast Asia. Market players report stronger offer of coal for Supramax transportation from Indonesia to China with April laycans and brisker shipments of nickel ore from Southeast Asia to China. Spot tonnage supply is still limited in the region, which encourages the owners to voice higher rates. At present, the Supramax time-charter bss DOP dely S.China via Indo redel China is quoted by brokers at $12-13k daily, while some contracts are concluded above $13k daily. The rates for Supramax fleet bss dely passing Spore on Indo RV amount to $15k daily on average. An Ultramax vessel can be chartered at $16k daily on the above basis. At the same time, the Ultramax time-charter bss DOP dely Spore via Indo redel SE Asia/China is quoted by owners at $17k daily. They want to get $15-16k daily for a Supramax carrier bss DOP dely Spore via Indo rede WCI. An Ultramax vessel has been chartered at $14.5k daily bss dely passing Spore via Indo redel WCI. The rates for Supramax fleet bss DOP dely CJK via Philippines redel China are negotiated at $13-14k daily. The deal for clinker transportation by a 57-58,000 dwt vessel bss dely Thai redel Chittagong has been signed at $17k daily.

On the voyage-basis, the transportation costs of 50,000 t of coal from Indonesia to southern China with early April laycans are negotiated at $9-9.5/t, while shipments to northern China are quoted by brokers at $10.5-11/t. Carrying 55,000 t of nickel ore from the Philippines to China with spot laycans is estimated by brokers at $11-12/t. The rates for transportation of 50,000 t of coal from Samarinda to Kandla are voiced by owners at $12.5-13/t. The deal for shipment of 60,000 t of barley from Kwinana to Machong with May-June laycans has been reportedly signed at $18.3/t. As before, the rates for transportation of 50,000 t of limestone from Vietnam to Bangladesh are negotiated at $11-12/t.

The tonnage supply and cargo offer stay balanced in the Handysize/Handymax segment. The time-charter rates for 30-40,000 dwt vessels bss dely Indonesia redel Philippines are voiced by brokers at $10.5k daily. The time-charter for Handysize carriers of 27-28,000 dwt bss DOP dely SE Asia via Aus redel China/SE Asia is quoted at about $10k daily. On the voyage-basis, the transportation costs of 40,000 t of manganese ore from Kuantan to northern China are negotiated at $13-13.5/t. Carrying 30-40,000 t of coal from South Kalimantan to Nantong with late March laycans is estimated at $13/t on average. The rates for shipment of 20-25,000 t of slag from Cam Pha to Yangon with late March - early April laycans are voiced by charterers at $19-20/t (given l/d rates of 8,000 t/5,000 t shinc bends).
