Asia-Pacific Handy/Supra market dwells in holiday slumber


The market lull is still seen in the southern part of the Asia-Pacific region. The requests for shipments of coal and ore are sporadic because of holidays in China. The Supramax owners mainly get offeres for coal transportation to India (the number of such requests has grown significantly compared with last week), while coal exports to Southeast Asia are slow. Handysize/Handymax vessels are chiefly involved in transportation of construction cargoes namely clinker and sand from Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia. The freight level has not changed since mid-February. However, the owners who are going to carry cargoes to India are striving to achieve higher rates.

The Supramax rates bss DOP dely Spore on Indo RV have stayed at $9-9.5k daily. The deal for a 58,000 dwt vessel bss DOP dely SEAsia via Indo redel WCI is negotiated at $9k daily. The Supramax time-charter on the above route is quoted by owners at $10k daily on average. A carrier of 57-58,000 dwt has been chartered at $8.75k daily bss DOP dely Nantong via Vietnam redel Bangladesh. The rates for Supramax fleet bss APS dely SEAsia redel Wafr now amount to $8k daily for the first 65 days and to $10-11k daily for later dates. The time-charter for a 37,000 dwt carrier bss DOP dely Spore on Indo RV is quoted by owners at $9.5k daily, while charterers are unwilling to pay more than $7.5k daily. The rates for 27-29,000 dwt vessels bss DOP dely Spore via Aus redel Spore-Japan are negotiated at $6.5k daily. The Handymax time-charter bss APS dely Thai redel WAfr may cost $6.5k daily on average.

On the voyage-basis, the transportation costs of 50,000 t of coal from Taboneo to Navlakhi are voiced by brokers at $10-10.25/t. The owners want to get about $11/t for shipment of 60,000 t of the cargo from Indonesia to Kandla. The deal for transportation of 55,000 t of wheat from Kwinana to Manila with March-April laycans has been signed at $14.5/t. Carrying 45,000 t of sand from Kuantan to Cochin is assessed by charterers at $8/t (bss free d/a in loading port). The rates for shipment of 20-25,000 t of clinker from Padang to Haldia are negotiated at $12/t (given l/d rates of 6,000 t/4,000 t shinc bends, as well as a draft restriction of 9 m in the loading port).
