Global CFI // week 36

Global CFI has risen by $0.17/t in early September due to a sharp increase in volume of grain to be shipped ex the Russian shallow ports and, as a result, a $2.21/t surge in Azov Sea CFI. A slight recovery of the Mediterranean market (the EMed CFI has grown by $0.3/t, the WMed CFI by $0.09/t) has also contributed to the growth of the global index.

Trade remains dull in the Black and Baltic Seas, which allows charterers to keep rates at acceptable levels.

Current developments in the commodity markets can hardly be called optimistic for small-tonnage owners. ISM Commodity Index has dropped by another 1.2 points this week. Export prices for Black Sea grain continue to decrease, since major buyers have been slow to purchase during the third consecutive week. Quotes for finished and semi-finished steel products have not changed much. With importers expecting the price cuts, demand for both HRC and square billets is weak in the MENA countries. Market players only note a slight recovery of sales of Black Sea square billets to Turkey. Moreover, Turkish importers continue regular purchases of imported steel scrap thus pushing the relevant prices up; the cargo is mainly shipped in large shipload lots from the Baltic ports, Europe and the USA.
