Rates going down in imbalanced Asia-Pacific Pmx/Kmx market

The situation has worsened significantly for Panamax/Kamsarmax owners in the southern part of the Asia-Pacific region amid the shortage of spot cargo offers. ISM sources report rather small number of new requests for transportation of Indonesian coal to Southeast Asia and India; the offer of Australian coal for shipments to India is also modest. The export volume of coal from Indonesia to China remains extremely small. Moreover, current trends are likely to continue in the short term given the introduction of restrictions on coal imports in some southern Chinese ports. Players already report a large surplus of fleet in the region; therefore, the gap in ideas of owners and charterers has grown significantly.

The Panamax time-charter bss DOP dely S.China via Indo redel China is now quoted by charterers at $8-8.5k daily, though the owners want to get at least $9k daily. The contract for a Panamax vessel bss DOP dely passing Taiwan via Indo redel Philippines has been fixed at $9.3k daily. A carrier of 76,000 dwt has been reportedly chartered at $9.25k daily bss DOP dely S.China via Indo redel SE Asia. The rates for Panamax fleet bss DOP dely China via Indo redel India are voiced by brokers within $9-9.5k daily. The deal for a Kamsarmax ship bss DOP dely CJK via Aus redel India has been signed at $10.65k daily, though earlier this week, a similar contract was concluded at $11.1k daily.

On the voyage-basis, a 65,000 t lot of coal from Bunati to southern China with April 21-25 laycans has been fixed at $5.8/t. The deal for transportation of 70,000 t of coal from Indonesia on the same route with 2H April laycans has been signed at $5.5/t. The rates for shipment of 70,000 t of coal from Taboneo to the east coast of India are now voiced by brokers at $7.8-7.9/t, while shipments to western India are estimated at high $8s/t. The contract for transportation of 75,000 t of coal from Hay Point, Abbot Point or Dalrymple Bay to Gangavaram with May 10-19 laycans has been fixed at $13.55/t. A 75,000 t lot of coal from Dalrymple Bay to the west coast of India (two discharge ports: Goa and Kandla) has been fixed at $15/t.
