Coaster Freight Index: Comprehensive data on shortsea shipping

Global CFI // week 42

Global CFI has risen by another $0.09/t this week, even despite a changed trend in the Azov Sea transportation market, where the sea-river freight rates have sagged by $2.1/t due to declining grain shipments ex Russian shallow ports. At the same time, coaster rates keep growing in the BlSea ($0.37/t up), the EMed ($0.2/t up) and the WMed ($0.16/t up), as well as in the Gulf of Finland (0.46/t up), the Lower Baltic ($0.15/t up), the North Sea ($0.39/t up) and the Far East ($0.62/t up). The ISM Commodity Index has been holding largely steady for the sixth consecutive week. The current situation in the commodity markets will hardly allow the owners of small-tonnage fleet to keep the rates growing in November. The export quotes for Black Sea grain have inched down following weaker demand for Ukrainian wheat and barley from major importers. There is an alarming situation for owners of sea-river fleet in the market, since Turkish buyers have switched to and already acquired large volumes of the US, French and Ukrainian wheat amid the uncertainty with imports of Russian grain. So, the short-term prospects of Russian wheat exports to Turkey are looking rather dim and uninspiring at the moment. Steep scrap demand remains very sluggish in Turkey; nevertheless, several lots of the cargo to be shipped from the Azov Sea have been purchased this week. Trade is slack in the segments of square billets and rebar. Meanwhile, buying interest in HRC has strengthened slightly in the Mediterranean region.
